Gryphons hit in overtime to again top Brock

GUELPH – Nicholas Volkov’s goal in overtime gave the Guelph Gryphons an 8-7 victory over the Brock Badgers in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association play Sunday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

The goal capped a comeback that saw the Gryphons rally from a three-goal deficit with just over five minutes to go in the third quarter.

Brock led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter, 4-3 at halftime and 6-3 in the third quarter before the Gryphs tied it late in the quarter with three goals in a span of two minutes and 38 seconds.

The teams were tied 6-6 at the end of the third quarter before scoring a goal apiece in the fourth quarter, Brock scoring midway through the quarter and the Gryphs responding four minutes later.

Mitch Ogilvie and Gavin Thibeault scored twice apiece for the Gryphs while Jabe Verbeek, Zakary Holmes, Robert Baxter and Volkov added single goals. Ogilvie collected three assists while Verbeek, Volkov and Matthew Allen each had one.

Blair Pachereva had a hat trick for Brock while the other goals were scored by Mitch Zullian, Jaden Patterson, Luca Romano and Matthew Labute. Getting one assist each were Zullian, Patterson, Aidan Buis, Matthew Hertner, goalie Connor O’Toole, Tommy Pollock and Andrew Rybka.

Cameron MacLeod collected the win in the Gryphon net with 11 saves while Brock’s O’Toole had four saves.

The Badgers outshot the Gryphs 18-12.

The win was the second over the Badgers this season as they had put an end to a 13-game losing streak to the Badgers with an 11-6 victory at St. Catharines June 17.

The win moves the Gryphs into a tie with the Western Mustangs atop the West Division. The Gryphs have a game in hand on the Mustangs as they’re the league’s only unbeaten team at 8-0 while Western is second at 8-1. Those two teams have clinched finishing positions in the top two in the division.

They’re followed by defending champion Brock at 4-4, Toronto Varsity Blues at 4-5, McMaster Marauders at 3-4, Laurier Golden Hawks at 2-6 and Laurentian Voyageurs at 0-9.

Trent Excalibur lead the East Division at 8-1 while the Bishop’s Gaiters are at 6-2, McGill Redbirds are at 5-2, Queen’s Gaels are at 5-3, Carleton Ravens are at 4-5, Nipissing Lakers are at 1-8 and Ottawa Gee-Gees are at 0-8.

The Gryphs and Mustangs are to decide first place in the division when they’re to meet Saturday in a game scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Mustang Field. The Gryphs defeated the Mustangs 12-5 at the Gryphon Soccer Complex Sept. 25.

After that game the Gryphs are to complete their regular season Sunday with a 1 p.m. game in Sudbury against Laurentian.
