Gryphons, Mustangs to meet in OUA men’s hockey’s West final

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons are to meet the Western Mustangs in the OUA men’s hockey league’s West Division final.

The Mustangs ousted the Ryerson Rams with a 3-2 win in overtime at Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletic Centre Sunday.

Western had been the eighth and final playoff qualifier in the West Division. The Mustangs posted an 11-13-4-0 record in the regular season and they knocked off the first-place Toronto Varsity Blues (21-5-2-0) in the divisional quarter-finals and second-place Ryerson (20-5-2-1) in the divisional semifinals.

The third-place Gryphons (17-6-4-1) are to host the opening game of the West final Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.

Second game of the series is slated for Saturday at 3 p.m. at Western’s Thompson Arena in London.

If a third game is needed, it’s to be played at the Gryphon Centre Sunday starting at 7:30 p.m.

The winner of the series gets a berth in the U Sports national tournament and is to face the East Division final in a one-game championship.

The East has also had upsets in its playoffs as the third-place Ottawa Gee-Gees (17-7-2-2) and fifth-place Concordia Stingers (13-10-5-0) are in the divisional final.

The Gryphs and Western also met in the West final last season with the Gryphs taking the series 2-1.

The Mustangs and Gryphons met three times during the regular season with Western winning twice by 5-4 scores – Nov. 7 at the Gryphon Centre and Jan. 30 at Budweiser Gardens – and Guelph winning 4-2 at Thompson Arena Nov. 29.
