Gryphons nip Toronto to force third game in semifinal

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons have survived to play at least one more game in the OUA women’s hockey playoffs as they edged the Toronto Varsity Blues 2-1 Saturday at the Gryphon Centre.

The result ties the best-of-three series at a win apiece with Game 3 set to go Sunday at Toronto’s Varsity Arena.

The Gryphs came from behind for the win in front of a boisterous crowd of 844, their largest crowd of the season.

Toronto’s Kaitlyn McKnight opened the scoring for Toronto at 11:19 of the second with help from Nikki McDonald and Lauren Omoto.

The Varsity Blues had the lead for 4:22 until Vanessa Bueti pulled the Gryphs even. Assists went to Tiana Faccio and Mayla Mayer.

Jaime Magoffin fired home the winner with 6:25 to go in the third. Tori Verbeek and Hannah Tait collected assists.

Game time for the third and final game of the series Sunday is 4 p.m.

Winner of the game advances to both the single-game OUA McCaw Cup championship game and the U Sports national championship tournament at Montreal March 16 to 19.

If the Gryphs win Sunday, they’ll face the Nipissing Lakers in the OUA final Saturday at North Bay.

If the Varsity Blues win Sunday, they’ll host Nipissing in the OUA final Saturday at Toronto.

Nipissing gained a berth in the OUA final and U Sports tournament by sweeping the Waterloo Warriors 2-0 in the other best-of-three semifinal with a pair of overtime victories.
