Gryphons nipped by second-ranked Ryerson Rams

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons took the Ryerson Rams to five sets before falling 3-2 in OUA women’s volleyball league play Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.

The Gryphs forced the match to its five-set limit with a 26-24 victory in the fourth set. The Rams, ranked second in U Sports women’s volleyball, took the fifth and deciding set 15-11.

Ryerson had opened the match with a 25-16 win in the first set before the Gryphs responded with a 25-13 victory in the second set. Ryerson came back with a 25-21 win in the third set.

The Gryphs had 56 kills to 53 for Ryerson and eight aces to six for the Rams. However, Ryerson had 94 digs to 73 for Guelph and the Rams had 10 blocks to six for the Gryphs.

Lisa Wedel led the Gryphs with 21 kills, an assist, a dig and three blocks while Jade Ziebarth had 14 kills, an assist, two aces and 13 digs. Jessica Chung had six kills, two aces and 13 digs while Alexandra Curran had a kill, 40 assists, an ace and 16 digs, Tara Tanasijevic had six assists and 15 digs and Alexandra Proulx had six kills, an ace, 12 digs and a block.

Cailin Wark had 21 kills, an assist, an ace, seven digs and a block for Ryerson while Brett Hagarty had 13 kills, five assists, an ace, 17 digs and three blocks. Samantha Cyrille had 30 digs while Lauren Wong had 37 assists and 14 digs.

The result leaves the Gryphs second in the West Division at 3-2 while Ryerson remains unbeaten and atop the East Division at 5-0.

The Gryphs are to host the Western Mustangs (third in the West at 2-2) at the GGAC Nov. 16 at 1 p.m.
