Gryphons pull away for victory in home opener

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons didn’t get on track until late in the first half, but once they did they couldn’t be stopped in their OUA women’s basketball home opener Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs trailed by as many as eight points in the second quarter, but got it together in the third quarter to head to a 95-80 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks.

Laurier led 23-19 at the end of the first quarter and stretched that to 27-19 by completing an eight-point run that started in the final minute of the opening quarter. However, the Gryphs started their comeback and managed to inch ahead 45-44 by halftime and then stretched that lead to 76-60 by the end of the third quarter.

Natalie Vigna hit for 30 points as she hit five three-pointers in the match. Mackeely Shantz netted 19 points and had 11 rebounds and four steals while Renee Armstrong collected 16 points and had six assists. Julia Colavecchia had nine rebounds.

Cassidy Hirtle and Brittyn Graves had 13 points apiece for Laurier while Janet Rose had 11. However, 22 points were unattributed. Alexa Sawchuk grabbed seven rebounds while three players had two assists apiece and Kathryn White and Rose each had two steals.

The Gryphs shot 54 percent on field goals, 38 percent on three-pointers and 90 percent (9 of 10) on free throws. They also had 17 points off turnovers, 12 on second chances and 20 from their bench.

Laurier hit 46 percent on field goals, 47 percent on three-pointers and 73 percent on free throws. The Golden Hawks also collected 20 points off turnovers, five off second chances and 49 from their bench (remember the unattributed points).

The Gryphs are one of three unbeaten teams in the West Division. Western Mustangs lead at 4-0 while Waterloo Warriors are at 3-0 and the Gryphs are at 2-0. The Windsor Lancers are at 2-2, Laurier’s at 1-3 and the Algoma Thunderbirds are at 0-4.

The league is operating with three divisions this season. Teams play their division mates twice each during the regular season and every other team once.

The Gryphs and Golden Hawks are to battle again Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Laurier and the Gryphs are to host the York Lions (1-3) next Saturday at 1 p.m. at the GGAC.
