Gryphons reign over Queen’s for fifth win in a row

GUELPH – The Guelph Junior Gryphons struck for two goals in the final eight minutes of the game to secure a 4-1 victory over the Queen’s Gaels in OUA women’s hockey play Sunday at the Gryphon Centre.

The Gryphs had scored once in the first period and added their second goal in the second period. Queen’s cut the difference to a single goal with a power-play marker with 8:14 to go in the third, but Guelph responded with its third goal 1:12 later. The final goal was an empty-netter with 34 seconds to play.

Nicole MacKinnon, Karli Shell, Kaitlin Lowy and Sydney Davison scored the goals for the Gryphs. Getting one assist each were Miranda Lantz, Davison, Lowy, Claire Merrick and Shell.

Caroline DeBruin scored for Queen’s with Bryce Desa getting an assist on the goal.

The Gryphs withstood pressure from the Gaels in the third period when Queen’s outshot Guelph 20-5 for a 32-26 advantage overall. The Gryphs took half of their 16 minutes in penalties in the third. The Gryphs went 2-for-7 on their power play while Queen’s went 1-for-7.

Valerie Lamenta claimed the win in the Guelph net with 31 saves while Stephanie Pascal had 22 saves for Queen’s in the loss.

The win was the fifth in a row for the Gryphs who have five games left on their regular-season schedule. They are the only team in the league to have already clinched a playoff berth.

Guelph leads the league at 14-2-1-2 and is followed by the Western Mustangs (12-4-0-4), Ryerson Rams (10-5-3-2), Toronto Varsity Blues (11-5-2-1), Nipissing Lakers (8-6-5-2), Queen’s (11-8-0-0), Waterloo Warriors (9-5-1-3), Brock Badgers (6-5-5-2), UOIT Ridgebacks (7-11-1-1), Laurentian Voyageurs (6-11-1-3), York Lions (4-10-3-1), Laurier Golden Hawks (4-14-0-1) and Windsor Lancers (0-16-2-2).

The Gryphs are to play at Western Saturday at 7 p.m. and at Windsor Sunday at 2 p.m.
