Gryphons Schell, Hoffman U Sports women’s rugby all-stars

OTTAWA – A pair of Guelph Gryphons were named U Sports women’s rugby first-team all-stars Thursday.

Centre Julia Schell and back three Talia Hoffman were named national university all-stars. Schell’s in her fifth and final season with the Gryphs while Hoffman’s in her second.

No Gryphons were named to the second team or won a major award.

The major award winners were Fabiola Forteza of the Laval Rouge et Or (player of the year), Lizzie Gibson of the Queen’s Gaels (rookie of the year), Zoe Goodwin-Sutton of the Victoria Vikes (student/athlete community service) and Kevin Rouet of Laval (Jim Atkinson Fox 40 coach of the year).

The Gryphs are to tangle with Laval in Friday’s semifinals. Game time is 5 p.m.

The other semifinal, set for 7:30 p.m., features the Ottawa Gee-Gees against OUA champion Queen’s.

Winners are to meet in the gold-medal match Sunday at 3:30 p.m. while the losers are to battle in the bronze-medal match at 12:30 p.m.
