Gryphons shoot plenty, but edged by Brock in shootout
GUELPH – There’s an old adage in hockey that if you fire the puck toward the opposition’s net, something good will happen.
Well, that didn’t quite work out for the Guelph Gryphons in OUA women’s hockey league play Wednesday night at the Gryphon Centre. The Gryphs shot and shot and shot, but were nipped 4-3 in a shootout by the Brock Badgers.
The Gryphs outshot Brock 41-19 in regulation time, but needed a goal by Madison Melo with 8:41 to go in the third period to get the game to a five-minute, 3-on-3 overtime period. Brock outshot the Gryphs 6-4 in the extra period, but no goals were scored.
That brought out the shootout with the first shooter for both teams scoring. Next goal to be scored was the winner with Brock’s fourth shooter, Cassidy Maplethorpe, getting that goal. Two of the Gryphon shooters put their shots off a goal post.
All three Guelph goals were scored by first-year Gryphons as Gabriele Underwood and Nicole MacKinnon netted their first ever goals for the locals and Melo’s goal was her second. Sydney Davison, Mallory Young, Gabrielle Smyth and Ashlee Lawrence each had one assist.
Hailey McCallum, Annie Berg and Amanda Ieradi scored Brock’s regulation-time goals. Assists went to Maplethorpe and Berg.
Jensen Murphy had 42 saves in net for Brock while Valerie Lamenta made 21 in the Guelph net.
Neither team scored on its power play, Guelph have three player-advantage situations and Brock having two.
The Gryphs lead the league at 9-2-1-2 while Brock climbs to sixth at 5-3-4-2.
Next up for the Gryphs is a game against the third-place Waterloo Warriors (8-3-1-2) at Waterloo’s Columbia Ice Fields Saturday at 7 p.m.
