Gryphons silver medalists in OUA men’s rugby

KINGSTON – The Guelph Gryphons finished as silver medalists in the OUA men’s rugby league following Sunday’s Turner Cup final at Queen’s University’s Nixon Field.

The host Queen’s Gaels topped the Gryphs 48-10 in the championship game.

The Gryphs attempted a second-half comeback after trailing 31-0 at the intermission. The Guelph side scored the first two tries of the second half, but Queen’s responded with three of their own to complete the scoring.

Guerschom Mukendi and Graeme Francolini scored the tries for the Gryphs.

Nicolas De Lallo led Queen’s with three tries while Dylan Young scored a try and kicked four conversions. Adding one try apiece were Rory Macphail, Joshua Englebrecht, Trevor Helgason and John Varriano.

The win was the 20th OUA victory in a row for the Gaels and the title win was their sixth in seven years. Their non-championship year was 2016 when the Gryphs won in a penalty kick shootout.

Both the Gryphs and Gaels advance to compete in the six-team Canadian University Men’s Rugby National Championship tournament at Victoria, B.C., Nov. 21 to 25.
