Gryphons soccer squads split with York Lions

TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons split their OUA soccer doubleheader with the York Lions Sunday at the York Lions Stadium.

The women rallied for a 3-2 victory before the men were blanked 2-0.

 

Women

Two goals in the second half allowed the Gryphs to rebound from a 2-1 deficit at halftime and score the win.

Tessa Ladhani pulled Guelph even in the 69th minute before Sydney Vanderhoef connected for the winner in the 83rd minute.

Olivia Brown had put Guelph ahead early when she scored in the game’s second minute.

Jotam Chouhan tied it for the Lions in the eighth minute and put the hosts ahead right at the end of the opening half with a goal assisted by Kalifornia Mitchell.

While York outshot the Gryphs 11-10, Guelph had nine of its shots reach the net as compared to four for the Lions.

The win keeps the Gryphs unbeaten in their last four games and leaves them at 5-1-1 in league play.

Western Mustangs lead the OUA West at 6-1-1 while the Gryphs are second and the Windsor Lancers are third at 3-1-3. Brock Badgers are fourth at 4-3-0 and York’s fifth at 3-1-2.

The Gryphs are to host Western Friday at 6 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

 

Men

York scored once in each half for the win.

Sammy Ssebadulka in first-half stoppage time and Matthew Mollicola in the 57th minute collected the goals for York.

The Gryphs carried the play in the game, outshooting the Lions 13-6 including a 10-4 advantage on shots on goal.

The loss was the first in league play this season for the Gryphs and leaves them at 3-1-3. They’re fifth in the OUA West behind the Western Mustangs (5-1-2), York (5-0-1), Brock Badgers (4-0-3) and McMaster Marauders (4-2-1).

The Gryphs and Western are to clash at the Gryphon Soccer Complex Friday at 8:15 p.m.
