Gryphons start Baggataway Cup against host Lakers

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons have been seeded fourth for the six-team Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association Baggataway Cup championship tournament this weekend at North Bay’s Nipissing University.

Trent Excalibur (first in Central Division at 6-0) are seeded first with Bishop’s Gaiters (first in East at 6-0) second, Brock Badgers (first in West at 5-1) third, the Gryphons (second in West at 4-2) fourth, host Nipissing Lakers (second in Central at 4-2) fifth and Queen’s Gaels (second in East at 4-2) sixth.

As hosts, Nipissing didn’t participate in a play-in game while the other five posted weekend victories (or one on Monday in Brock’s case) to qualify for the final tournament of the season.

All league play was strictly a divisional affair this season.

The Gryphs and Lakers have meet four times in the history of the league, twice in both 2015 and 2014. The Gryphs had a 13-9 win at home Oct. 25, 2015, and lost 15-11 at North Bay Oct. 4, 2015

Guelph last won the title in 2014 with a 15-12 win over McGill Redbirds 15-12 at Montreal.Since then they’ve been eliminated from the playoffs in the play-in game in 2018, quarter-finals (2019), semifinals (2016 and 2017) and play-in game (2018).

Play is to start Friday with the two quarterfinal matches. The Gryphs are to play Nipissing at 4 p.m. and Brock and Queen’s are to tangle at 7 p.m.

In Saturday’s semifinals, Trent is to play the lowest seed of Friday’s winners at 1 p.m. while Bishop’s is to tackle the highest seed of the quarterfinal winners at 4 p.m.

Saturday’s winners are to meet in the championship game Sunday at 2 p.m.
