Gryphons suffer setback to Western Mustangs
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons suffered their second consecutive OUA women’s volleyball league loss at home Saturday when they were handed a 3-1 setback by the Western Mustangs at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.
The Gryphs took the first set 25-18 before Western won three in a row by 25-20, 25-15 and 25-16 scores.
The Mustangs recorded 47 kills, nine aces and 11 blocks to 41 kills, seven aces and four blocks for the Gryphs.
Jessica Chung had nine kills, three aces, 10 digs and a block for the Gryphs while Alexandra Proulx had 11 kills and 10 digs, Lisa Wedel had nine kills, a dig and a block and Alexandra Curran had a kill, 24 assists, two aces, seven digs and a block.
Kristina Curcin had 13 kills, a dig and three blocks for Western while Kate Ferguson had seven kills, a dig and seven blocks, Carly Kimmett had eight kills, four aces and 15 digs and Kate Van Camp had 11 kills, six digs and a block.
The Gryphs (3-3) are tied for third in the West Division with the fifth-ranked Waterloo Warriors (3-2) and McMaster Marauders (3-4) while Western is second at 5-2. Seventh-ranked Brock Badgers lead at 6-0.
The Gryphs are to play Brock at St. Catharines Saturday at 6 p.m. and host the Toronto Varsity Blues (second in the East at 5-1) next Sunday at 5 p.m. at the GGAC.
