Gryphons swept twice by Brock Badgers

ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Gryphons were swept twice by the Brock Badgers in OUA women’s volleyball play on the weekend.

The Gryphs were defeated 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-19) at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre Saturday night and 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-17) at Brock’s Bob Davis Gymnasium Sunday afternoon.

The Badgers had seven aces to Guelph’s one Saturday and also had a 39-28 edge in kills, 34-28 edge in assists and 45-37 edge in digs. The Gryphs had 10 blocks to six for the Badgers.

Briar Crerar had 10 kills for the Gryphs while Jaymie Stephenson had five kills and five digs. Sophie Fernback had five kills and five blocks while Sydeny Simonson had the ace. Sarah McNames and Maya Morabito had two blocks apiece while Ella Carter had 22 assists, Alexa Shields had six assists and five digs and Mackenzie Proulx had 11 digs.

Grace Pyatt had nine kills for Brock while Sadie Dick had three blocks, Aleiah Torres had 16 digs and Sara Rohr had 21 assists. Rohr, Emily Foest and Madison Chimienti each had two aces.

Brock led all the same categories Sunday as the Badgers had 39 kills to Guelph’s 17, 12 aces to Guelph’s two, 36 assists to Guelph’s 15 and 31 digs to Guelph’s 18. The Gryphs had nine blocks to Brock’s four.

Fernback had 10 kills, an ace, five blocks and four digs for the Gryphs. Morabito had three kills and three blocks while Stephenson had two kills. Simonson again had an ace while Samantha Ingleton had four blocks, Carter had 10 assists, Shields had four assists, Proulx had six digs and an assist and Crerar had two digs.

For the Badgers, Chimienti had 10 kills, Meera Sayal had four aces, Christina Jovetic had three blocks, Rohr had 23 assists and Torres had eight digs.

The results leave the Gryphs at 1-3 this season and Brock at 2-0.

The Gryphs have a pair of games against the Trent Excalibur (0-2) in Peterborough this week as they’re to play Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. both days.
