Gryphons to battle Ottawa for national bronze Sunday

VICTORIA, B.C. – The Guelph Gryphons are to play for bronze Sunday at the U Sports women’s rugby championship tournament.

That was assured Friday when the Ontario silver medalist Gryphs were handed a 30-8 setback by the Quebec champion Laval Rouge et Or.

The Gryphs fell behind early and never recovered as Laval built a 15-point lead in the first 13 minutes of the game.

Audrey Champagne kicked a penalty goal in the fifth minute and then she converted a try by Laura Guay two minutes later.

Annabelle Parent gave Laval the 15-0 lead in the 12th minute when she added the second try of the game for the Rouge et Or.

Kendra Cousineau kicked a penalty goal for the Gryphs in the 17th minute to wrap up the scoring in the opening half.

Laval hit quickly in the second half as Marie-Pier Fauteux scored a try in the first minute of the half. Champagne converted.

Emily Clark connected for Guelph’s lone try of the match three minutes later in what would turn out to be the Gryphs’ final scoring play of the game.

Fauteux hit for her second try of the half three minutes after Clark’s try and the Rouge et Or would finish the scoring the way they started it with a penalty goal by Champagne in the 68th minute.

The Ontario champion Queen’s Gaels defeated the Quebec silver medalist Ottawa Gee-Gees 22-17 in Friday’s other national semifinal.

Sunday’s games have Canada West rivals UBC Thunderbirds and Victoria Vikes meeting in the fifth-place game at 2 p.m., the Gryphs tangling with the Gee-Gees in the bronze-medal game at 4 p.m. and Laval and Queen’s meeting to decide the national championship in the gold-medal match at 6 p.m.
