Gryphons to start 2019 football season at home

GUELPH – With the exception of an unusual cold snap late next summer or early next fall, if you’re watching the Guelph Gryphons play OUA football in the cold at Alumni Stadium next year, you’re watching the Guelph Gryphons in the playoffs.

The Guelph Gryphons are to complete the home portion of their 2019 schedule by the end of September.

The OUA released its football schedule for next year Thursday and the Gryphs are to play all four of their home games in the first six weeks of the regular season.

The Guelph side also has a pair of night games on its schedule, both on the road. All home games are to start at 1 p.m.

Using the 2018 regular-season records of their opponents, only Carleton has a tougher schedule than the Gryphs. Carleton’s opponents were 35-29 this year while Guelph’s opponents were 34-30, same as Ottawa’s opponents.

The York Lions have the easiest schedule in terms of their opponent’s 2018 records as their 2019 opponents went 28-36 in 2018. The Yates Cup-champion Western Mustangs were 8-0 in the regular season and Ottawa was second at 6-2. York isn’t scheduled to play either in the 2019 regular season.

For the Gryphs, they’re not scheduled to play either the Laurier Golden Hawks (4-4 in 2018) or Windsor Lancers (1-7) in the 2019 regular season.

The Gryphs are to begin their season Aug. 25 with a home game against the McMaster Marauders.

They follow that with a night game on Sunday of the Labour Day weekend as they’re to tangle with the Carleton Ravens at Ottawa at 7 p.m.

They return home for a Sept. 7 game against the York Lions Sept. 7.

The following week they’re to play the Waterloo Warriors at Waterloo’s Warrior Field Sept. 14 at 1 p.m.

Then it’s two home games in a row as the Gryphs are to host the Western Mustangs Sept. 21 and the Ottawa Gee-Gees in their Homecoming Game Sept. 28 to round off their home part of the schedule.

The Gryphs will get their bye on the seventh week of the league’s schedule then return to play the Queen’s Gaels Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. at Richardson Memorial Stadium in Kingston. That’s the Thursday before the Thanksgiving weekend.

Final game of the regular season is to be against the Toronto Varsity Blues at Varsity Stadium Oct. 19 at 1 p.m.

The OUA quarter-finals are set for Oct. 26, the semifinals for Nov. 2 and the Yates Cup championship game for Nov. 9.

The Yates Cup winner is to play the Canada West winner in the Mitchell Bowl Nov. 16. That game will be hosted by the Canada West winner.

Mitchell Bowl winner advances to the national Vanier Cup championship game slated for Nov. 23 at Quebec City.
