Gryphons’ win streak in men’s hoops snapped by McMaster

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons had their win streak in OUA men’s basketball play stopped at three Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre when they were handed a 97-80 setback by the McMaster Marauders.

It was Guelph’s first loss in league play in 2019.

The Gryphs ran to a 27-21 lead by the end of the first quarter, but a 13-3 run late in the second quarter helped push McMaster to a 47-39 lead at halftime. The gap remained at eight points (65-57) at the end of the third quarter, but the Marauders started a 15-4 run just before the end of the quarter.

McMaster shot 48.6 per cent from the floor, 40.9 per cent from beyond the arc and 72.0 per cent from the line while the Gryphs shot 44.6 per cent from the floor, 31.6 per cent from long range and 57.1 per cent from the line.

Aaron Nugent had a career-high 24 points to lead the Gryphs while Rasheed Weekes had 15 and Tommy Yanchus and Malcolm Glanville netted 13 apiece. Weekes grabbed nine rebounds while Nugent had five assists, Kieran Naus had two steals and Weekes had four blocks.

David McCulloch led McMaster with 23 points and Connor Gilmore had 20. Others in double figures were Jordan Henry (13), Damiann Prehay (12) and Tristan Lindo 11. Sefa Otchere had seven rebounds while Henry had nine assists and Henry and McCulloch each had two steals.

The result leaves the Gryphs (6-8) and McMaster (6-7) tied for fourth in the West Division. The Marauders have a game in hand.

The Gryphs are to host the Brock Badgers (8-5) in an 8 p.m. game Wednesday at the GGAC.
