Gryphs hoops women finish hot, but cold quarter costly

GUELPH – A cold second quarter on a cold night proved costly for the Guelph Gryphons as they were handed a 76-68 setback by the fourth-ranked Queen’s Gaels in OUA women’s basketball play Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs trailed by two points after the opening quarter, but couldn’t keep up the hot start against the Gaels. The Gryphs had led by six points (9-3) at the game’s three-minute mark, but had a hard time getting shots to drop in the second quarter when they shot 17 percent on field goals, hitting three of 18. Queen’s took the same number of shots in the quarter and drained 10 of them.

The Gaels led 23-21 at the end of the first quarter, 48-32 at halftime and 65-49 after three quarters. A 17-3 run in the final quarter allowed the Gryphs to get the gap down to five points with 47 seconds to play, but Queen’s sank three free throws in the final 14 seconds to complete the scoring in the game.

MacKeely Shantz struck for 29 points, including 11 in the fourth-quarter surge, to lead the Gryphs. Renee Armstrong added 15 while Hannah Bourdon had five. Marielle Kleuskens grabbed eight rebounds while Shantz had eight assists and Trinity Papamandjaris had two blocks. Armstrong, Julia Colavecchia and Bourdon each had three steals.

Laura Donovan had 17 points for Queen’s while Emma Weltz and Julia Chadwick each had 15 and Isabella Belvedere had 11. Chadwick hauled down 13 rebounds and had two blocks while Donovan had three steals.

For the game, the Gryphs shot 38 percent on field goals, 31 percent on three-pointers and 91 percent on free throws. They also scored 36 points in the paint and nine on second chances and received 14 from their bench.

The Gaels shot 42 percent on field goals, 33 percent on three-pointers and 71 percent on free throws and scored 38 points in the paint, eight on second chances and received 13 from their bench.

The big difference in the stats was that the Gaels took 24 three-pointers and sank eight of them while the Gryphs took 13 and sank four.

The Gryphs are second in the West Division and sixth overall at 12-5 while Queen’s leads the East Division and the entire conference at 16-1.

The Gryphs are to play the Brock Badgers (10-7) at Brock Saturday at 6 p.m.
