Gryphs seeded third for University Cup championship tourney

GUELPH – The seedings are out and the OUA champion Guelph Gryphons are seeded third for the U Sports Cavendish Farms University Cup national university men’s hockey championship tournament at Halifax.

The Atlantic-champion New Brunswick Varsity Reds are seeded first while the Canada West-champion Saskatchewan Huskies are seeded second.

Fourth seeds are the OUA silver medalist Ottawa Gee-Gees while the host and Atlantic silver medalist Acadia Axemen are seeded fifth. Sixth seeds are the Atlantic bronze medalist Saint Mary’s Huskies while the OUA bronze medalist Western Mustangs are seeded seventh and the Canada West silver medalist UBC Thunderbirds are seeded eighth.

The quarter-finals are set for Thursday and Friday, two games each day, and the Gryphs are to play Saint Mary’s Thursday at 6 p.m.

If the Gryphs win, they’ll play the winner of the quarter-final between Saskatchewan and Western (Thursday at 1 p.m.) in a semifinal Saturday at 2 p.m. All quarter-final losers are eliminated.

Semifinal winners are to play in the gold-medal match Sunday at 7 p.m. while semifinal losers are to meet in the bronze-medal game Sunday at 2 p.m.

All games are to be played at Halifax’s Scotiabank Centre.
