Guelph CVI Gaels post surprise win in girls’ rugby

GUELPH – The Guelph CVI Green Gaels moved to the top of the District 4/10 high school girls’ rugby Pool B standings when they surprised the Ross Royals 24-19 Thursday at Ross.

The game was a see-saw affair with each team taking a turn in the lead.

GCVI hit for the first try of the match, but Ross tied it up before GCVI scored again. Ross responded with another try and kicked a convert to lead by two at half. The host Royals extended their lead with another try before the Gaels scored the final two tries for the victory.

Ava Buda scored two tries for the Gaels while Kaleigh Watson and Jenna Babulic had one apiece and Jillian Anderson kicked a convert.

Emily Cooper scored all three tries for Ross before going down with an injury. Maeve Hagarty booted two converts.

The teams are to complete their regular seasons early next week as the Gaels are to play the Bishop Macdonell Celtics at the University of Guelph’s Varsity Field Monday at 2:30 p.m. and Ross is to host the Centennial Spartans Tuesday at 4 p.m.
