Guelph Oaks extend lead in Regional South loop
GUELPH – The Guelph Oaks extended their lead atop the Ontario Soccer League’s Regional South league with a 1-0 victory over JJD Sports Saturday afternoon at Centennial Bowl.
Luke Humphrey struck for the game’s only goal late in the opening half.
Daniel Keir recorded the shutout, his sixth of the season. He preserved his clean sheet by stopping a penalty shot midway through the second half.
The win avenged their only loss of the season, a 3-2 setback to JJD Sports last Sunday.
The victory lifts the Oaks to 8-1-2 in league play. Hrvat St. Catharines is second at 5-2-0 and Mississauga Croatia third at 3-0-2. JJD Sports is sixth at 2-6-1.
The Oaks get a bit of time away from league play as they’re next game, against Mississauga Croatia, is set for July 27 at Mississauga’s Courtney Park.
The Oaks have five league games left on their schedule including two postponed matches that have to be rescheduled.
The locals are also still alive in Frank Docherty Cup play after they edged East Metal of the Regional Central East league 1-0 in the round of 16.
