Guelph Redcoats women return to OWL league final

GUELPH – The Guelph Redcoats will get the chance to defend their Ontario Women’s League championship they won in 2019 next weekend at Markham’s Fletcher’s Fields.

The Redcoats advanced to the league final after turning in a big second half Saturday at Exhibition Park in their semifinal with the Aurora Barbarians. The locals scored four tries in the second half, including one on the first possession of the half, to push aside Aurora with a 48-17 victory.

Guelph had led 17-10 at halftime.

The Redcoats are the defending league champs as league play fell victim to the global pandemic in both 2020 and 2021.

The Redcoats are to play the Toronto Nomads in the championship match after the Nomads defeated the Brantford Harlequins 12-7 in Saturday’s other semifinal.

Guelph had finished atop the league standings after winning all 10 of their regular-season games. The Nomads were second at 7-3, Brantford third at 6-4 and Aurora fourth at 5-5. The Oshawa Vikings and Balmy Beach both finished with 1-9 records.

During the regular season, the Redcoats defeated the Nomads 19-14 in their season openers May 14 at Toronto’s Eglinton Flats and 37-24 at Exhibition Park July 9.

In Marshall Division men’s playoff action at Exhibition Park Saturday, the Vaughan Yeomen edged the Redcoats 20-17 in Firsts play.
