Guelph Regals and Owen Sound tie one on

OWEN SOUND – The Guelph Regals and Owen Sound North Stars battled to a 9-9 standoff Thursday night in Ontario junior B lacrosse league play at the Bayshore Community Centre.

The Regals rallied from a three-goal deficit in the third period to earn the tie. They actually led by a goal midway through the third, but the hosts scored twice to regain their lead with just less than six minutes to go in regulation time.

Mitch Zulian’s goal for the Regals with 33 seconds to go in the third forced the 10-minute overtime period and both teams scored once in the extra frame.

Owen Sound led 3-1 at the end of the first period and 6-3 at the end of the second and the teams were knotted 8-8 at the end of the third.

Jayden Bushey and Zulian scored twice apiece for Guelph while single goals were netted by Trenten Hitchcock, Joel Hoogaars, Cohen Campbell, Liam Holwell and Callyn Martin. Holwell also had three assists while David Pavlinich, Reed Kurtz and Campbell had two apiece and Gavin Lang, Jack Burke, Zach Sanders, Jean-Luc Vereecke, goaltender Chris Wood and Zulian had one each.

Quinton Maddock struck for a hat trick for Owen Sound while Andrew Lavergne, Brody Caskenette, Hayden Coulter, Dominic Millman, Dustin Lantz and Spencer Elder also scored. Caskenette and Mike Fiegehen each collected three assists while Brady Stewart had two and Noah Rouse, Lavergne, Maddock, Justin McCrae, Keegan Mcilmoyle, Millman and Coulter had one each.

Owen Sound outshot the Regals 60-49 and went 2-for-3 on its power play while the Regals were scoreless on four power plays.

Wood made 51 saves to get the tie for the Regals while Brady Lisk made 40 saves for Owen Sound.

The tie leaves the Regals at 3-7-1 and Owen Sound at 3-6-1.

The Regals are to play the St. Catharines Spartans (1-6-0) at the Merriton Lions arena Friday at 8 p.m.
