Guelph Regals clouted by Six Nations Rebels

HAGERSVILLE – The Guelph Regals were held to a pair of goals by Liam Holwell as they were dropped 12-2 by the Six Nations Rebels in Ontario junior B lacrosse league play Friday night at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.

Six Nations scored the lone goal of the first period before pulling away to an 8-1 lead by the end of the second.

Michael Blaymires, Matthew Vilas, Grant Patterson and Brandon Maldonado each had an assist for the Regals.

Marshall Powless and Chayton King fired home four goals apiece for Six Nations while single goals were added by Daylen Hill, Mason Hill, Weylon Abrams and Austin Skye. Wes Whitlow assisted on six of the goals while Tycie Cowan, Weylon Abrams and Powless each had three assists and Mason Hill, Owen Martin and Austin Giles each had one.

The Regals were whistled for 49 of the 55 minutes in penalties called during the game. Six Nations responded by going 5-for-9 on its power play while the Regals were scoreless on their two power plays.

The Regals are in a five-team battle for the final two playoff spots in the Western Conference. Top eight in the conference qualify for the playoffs and they’re eighth, one point behind the St. Catharines Spartans, one ahead of both the Point Edward Pacers and London Blue Devils and two ahead of the Wallaceburg Red Devils.

However, St. Catharines, Point Edward and Wallaceburg each have two games in hand and London has one.

The Regals have five games left on their regular-season schedule with the next three at the Victoria Road arena and the final two on the road. The games include one each against St. Catharines, London and Point Edward, one against winless Welland Generals and one against Mid West Division-leading Hamilton Bengals.

The Guelph squad is to host St. Catharines Sunday at 3 p.m.
