Guelph Regals edged by Orangeville’s quick pair in third
GUELPH – The Guelph Regals yielded a pair of goals in just over a minute early in the third period to the Orangeville Northmen and that proved to be the difference in the match as the Northmen prevailed 7-6 in Ontario junior B lacrosse league play Sunday night at the West End arena.
A second-period comeback saw the Regals rebound from a 2-0 deficit at the end of the first into a 5-5 knot by the end of the second. However, Orangeville was up 7-5 by the five-minute mark of the third and the Regals were held to a single goal the rest of the way.
Jayden Bushey and Reed Kurtz each scored twice for the Regals while Shane Halliwell and Joel Hoogaars netted single goals. Halliwell had three assists and Kurtz and Cohen Campbell had two each and Mitch Zulian, goalie Chris Wood and Bushey had one apiece.
Tanner Buck and Jeremy Searle struck for three goals apiece for Orangeville and Liam McGrath scored the other goal. Mitchell Bernier, Grayson Houghton and Liam Smith each had three assists and McGrath had two and Quinten Schneider and Buck had one each.
Orangeville outshot the Regals 55-48 and went 1-for-5 on its power play while the hosts went 3-for-7.
Wood was charged with the loss for the Regals. He had 48 saves. Daniel Tanner picked up the win for Orangeville in relief of Keegan Madden. Tanner made 19 saves after he replaced Madden midway through the game. Madden had 23 saves.
Orangeville is second in the Mid West Division at 7-4-0 while the Regals are fourth at 3-9-1. The Regals are also 10th in the Western Conference, two points behind the Owen Sound North Stars (4-9-1) and three behind both the St. Catharines Spartans and Niagara Thunderhawks who have identical 5-7-0 records. Top eight in the conference qualify for the playoffs.
