Guelph Regals finish their season with victory

GUELPH – The Guelph Regals struck for a pair of goals 21 seconds apart with less than five minutes to go to edge the Wallaceburg Red Devils 12-10 in their final game of the Ontario junior B lacrosse league season Sunday at the Sleeman Centre.

With the win, the Regals complete the season 11th in the 13-team Western Conference with a 4-16-0 record while Wallaceburg finishes fifth at 12-7-1.

The Regals trailed 2-1 at the end of the first period, but led 7-4 after the second. They were ahead by five by the two-minute mark of the third, but Wallaceburg scored four times in two minutes and 25 seconds, then pulled even with a power-play goal with 6:18 to play.

Liam Holwell’s power-play marker for the Regals at 15:02 of the third put the Regals ahead again and Reed Kurtz added a little breathing space with what would be the final goal of the season for the Regals at 15:23.

Colin Matthews hit for a hat trick for the Regals while Holwell, Kurtz and Jack Burke scored twice each. Single goals were netted by Braydon Hickey, Riley Matthews and Sam Shaw. Colin Matthews had five assists while Riley Matthews had three, Kurtz two and Burke, Shane Halliwell, Hickey, Holwell, Joel Hoogaars, Zach Sanders and goalkeeper Brady Wilson one each.

Carter Hastings fired in four goals for Wallaceburg while Evan Mathany and Sidney Powless had two each and Tyler Brown and Vern Hill had one apiece. Brown had six assists while Mathany had five, Hill two and Kyle Dawson, Parker Gilhuly, Hastings and Corey Lucier one apiece.

The Regals were outshot 58-53 and both teams went 4-for-7 on their power plays.

Wilson collected the win in net for the Regals while Noble Jacobs took the loss for Wallaceburg. He relieved Emily VanDamme at 10:17 of the second.
