Guelph Regals hang on to edge Cambridge

GUELPH – The Guelph Regals withstood a late charge by the Cambridge Highlanders to register a 17-16 victory in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Sunday at the Victoria Road arena.

The Regals appeared to have the game in hand as they held a five-goal lead with five minutes to play, but Cambridge connected for the final four goals of the game to cut the gap to a single goal with just under a minute and a half to go.

The Regals had scored the first three goals of the game and led 8-4 at the end of the first period. The hosts were up 13-9 at the end of the second and 17-12 with 6:21 to go.

Marcus Keleher struck for six goals and five assists for the Regals while Owen Orpana had four goals and five assists and Ethan Keleher had three goals and five assists. Dylan Davey collected two goals and three assists while Charlie Boon collected a goal and six assists and Logan Reyes had a goal and an assist. Dylan Goddard had two assists while Kyle Beecraft, Marcus Visentin, Cam Wheeldon and goalkeeper Anthony Fonte each had an assist.

Nick Thomas had six goals and four assists including the final three goals, two of them being power-play goals. Brody McGivern had four goals and two assists while Tyler Francis-Renner had three goals and four assists. Evan Wallace and Cole Main each had a goal and assist while Dalton Thomas also scored. Drake Neal had six assists and Trey Weinstein had two.

The Regals outshot Cambridge 62-51 and they went 4-for-9 while Cambridge went 7-for-15.

Fonte had 35 saves to get the win for Guelph while Josh Swift started in net for Cambridge for the first 16:40 before being replaced by Cambridge native and former Regal Mateo Beaudin. Swift gave up eight goals on 32 shots while Beaudin yielded nine goals on 30 shots.

Marcus Keleher leads the league in scoring with 37 goals and 42 assists in 13 games while Orpana is second with 38 goals and 40 assists. Francis-Renner is fifth with 36 goals and 26 assists in 12 games.

Six Nations Rebels lead the Western Conference at 13-0-0 and are followed by the Elora Mohawks at 11-2-0, the Regals at 10-3-0, St. Catharines Athletics at 9-2-0, Windsor Clippers at 8-4-0, Hamilton Bengals at 8-5-0, Owen Sound North Stars 5-6-0, Cambridge at 5-7-0, Wallaceburg Red Devils at 3-8-0, London Blue Devils at 1-11-0, Welland Generals at 0-12-0 and Point Edward Pacers at 0-13-0.

The Regals and Elora are to meet Wednesday at the Victoria Road arena. Game time is 8 p.m.
