Guelph Regals quick to dispose of London Blue Devils

GUELPH – Best things to say about this one is that the game didn’t last long.

The Guelph Regals scored eight times in the final five and a half minutes of the second period on their way to a 20-3 shellacking of the undermanned London Blue Devils in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Wednesday night at the Victoria Road arena.

The Blue Devils had 16 players on the scorecard, but only 11 shook hands with the Regals at the end of the match.

Such was the one-sidedness of the game that the third period was played in straight time with the exception of the water breaks. And the Regals changed goalies on the fly as there was no stoppage in play when call-up netminder Brayden Larsen replaced starter Mateo Beaudin midway through the third period.

To conserve energy of their players in the second period when they had, to use the hockey term, the long change London kept one player in Guelph’s end the entire time. The Regals kept a player back to guard him so there wasn’t a manpower advantage in the London end.

The Regals led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 16-3 at the end of the second.

Dylan Goddard scored five times for the hosts in their final home game of the regular season while Owen Orpana had a hat trick. Tyler Beecraft and Jack MacAlpine added two goals apiece while singletons were scored by Mason Walton, Sam MacDonald, Dylan Davey, Callyn Martin, Ethan Keleher, Marcus Keleher, Joel Stevens and Matthew Darroch.

Stevens collected four assists while Walton, Martin and Marcus Keleher had three apiece and Goddard, Beecraft, Ethan Keleher, Riley McLellan and MacAlpine had two each. Picking up one each were MacDonald, Julian Siragusa, Hayden Sabourin, Orpana and Beaudin.

Kaleb Fulkerson, Robert Morgan and Kahelot Powless scored for London.

The Regals outshot the Blue Devils 85-23 and went 2-for-5 on their power play while London went 1-for-2.

Beaudin picked up the win with 18 saves while Larsen stopped both shots he faced. Jason O’Neill had 65 saves for London.

The Regals are fifth in the Western Conference at 12-7-0, but can still be passed by the Six Nations Rebels (9-7-1).

That’s not likely to happen as the Regals have the unfortunate situation of having to get ready for the playoffs playing the bottom two teams in the conference in their final two games of the regular season. London is 11th in the 11-team conference at 0-18-0 while the Welland Generals are 10th at 2-15-0, their two wins being against London. The Regals are to close out their regular season with a Sunday night game in Welland.

A fifth-place finish would mean the Regals would play the worst of the top four in the conference quarter-finals, the opening round of the playoffs which are to start next week.

The top four teams have been decided, but their order of finish hasn’t been decided. Elora Mohawks lead at 15-2-0 while the Hamilton Bengals, St. Catharines Athletics and Windsor Clippers are all at 14-4-0.
