Guelph Royals again edged by Welland Jackfish
GUELPH – For the second time in three days the Guelph Royals were nipped 3-2 by the Welland Jackfish in Intercounty Baseball League play.
Tuesday night at Hastings Stadium, the Royals were held to a pair of runs, both scored in the seventh inning after Welland had scored its three runs with two in the sixth and one in the top of the seventh.
The Royals started the bottom of the seventh by getting their first two batters on base, Matthew Pilarczyk with a single and Brendan Keys due to a fielding error by Welland second baseman Brendan Nicholson. An out later the locals had the bases loaded when Josh Garton was plunked by a pitch.
Sean Reilly followed with a single to score one run and Angel Villalona hit a sacrifice fly to score a second run, but that was all the Royals were to get.
Welland’s winning run in the top of the inning was scored with two out when Caleb Feuerstake singled to knock home Bryce O’Farrell who had opened the inning with a single and gone to second on a groundout.
Yomar Concepcion was tagged with the loss as he allowed the three runs, all earned, off six hits and two walks in seven innings. He had seven strikeouts. Steve Dressler and Brett Lawson pitched an inning apiece and both yielded a hit, but no walks or runs. Lawson had two strikeouts and Dressler one.
Rich Corrente picked up the win for Welland and Casey Bouillere-Howard had the save. Corrente surrendered the two runs, one earned, off seven hits and two walks in seven innings while Bouillere-Howard gave up two hits and a walk in two innings. Corrent had five strikeouts and Bouillere-Howard one.
Reilly hit for three singles for the Royals while Garton had a pair of doubles and Ethan Mohan added a double and a single. Barlas and Pilarczyk each had a single.
O’Farrell had a double and two singles for the Jackfish while former Royal Matt Schmidt and Feuerstake each hit two singles. Brendon Dadson added one single.
The result allowed the Jackfish (8-7) to move ahead of the Royals (7-8) in the standings. Welland has won all three meetings between the teams this season.
The Royals are to continue their busy stretch where they’re to play 12 games in 18 days with a home game against the Hamilton Cardinals Thursday. It’s the reschedule of the postponed May 25 match. Game time at Hastings Stadium is 7:30 p.m.
That game will also be the first of four games in as many days as the Royals are to play the Kitchener Panthers at Kitchener Friday night, host the London Majors Saturday afternoon and play the Toronto Maple Leafs in Toronto Sunday afternoon.
