Guelph Royals doubled by London Majors
LONDON – The Guelph Royals surrendered four runs in the third inning as they were handed a 6-3 setback by the London Majors in Intercounty Baseball League play Friday night at London’s Labatt Park.
The Royals had taken the early lead with single runs in the first and third innings. Jeff MacLeod’s single knocked David Mendham home with Guelph’s first run while the third-inning run came when Angel Villalona singled to score Mendham.
London shot ahead in the bottom of the inning when London smacked five hits including four in a row.
Yomar Concepcion was tagged with the loss. The starter for the Royals allowed all six runs, four earned, off 10 hits in six innings and he struck out six. Evan Kiser pitched the final two innings and kept London scoreless during his stint. He gave up a hit and fanned three. The Guelph pitchers didn’t issue any walks.
Juliandry Higuera pitched the complete game for the Majors. He surrendered three runs, two earned, off nine hits and a walk and he struck out 12.
Ricky Murray’s double was the lone extra-base hit among the 12 recorded by the Royals. Mendam and Sean Reilly each had two singles while Villalona, MacLeod, Matthew Pilarczyk and Ethan Mohan each had one.
Jonathan Duforest hit a double for London while every other London hit was a single. Carlos Arteaga, Ismael Pena and Cleveland Brownlee each had two while Phillip Thrappas, Byron Reichstein, Mike Ambrose and Steve Froese each had one.
The loss dropped the Royals’ record to 5-6 while London’s mark improved to 3-8.
The Royals are to host the Brantford Red Sox (1-7) Saturday at Hastings Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m.
