Guelph Royals dropped by league-leading Welland

GUELPH – The Welland Jackfish scored at least one run in all but one inning Tuesday night at Hastings Stadium as the Intercounty Baseball League leaders dumped the Guelph Royals 16-7.

Welland sent all nine of its batters to the plate in the top of the first inning and scored four runs off four hits, two walks, a wild pitch and a pair of stolen bases to grab a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. The Jackfish had 10 runs before the Royals scored their first in the bottom of the fourth.

The Jackfish slammed 20 hits in the game and didn’t make any errors while the Royals had seven hits and committed three errors.

Guelph’s first two pitchers, Nelson Mercado and Lukas Barry, struggled as they combined to yield 14 runs, 12 earned, off 14 hits and five walks in five innings. They threw 117 pitches between them, 65 for strikes.

Gianfranco Morello, Welland’s first batter of the game, was walked, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Leo Markotic. Brandon Nicholson was safe at first on a fielder’s choice and then he promptly stole second and third before scoring on an error by Guelph third baseman Malik Collymore. James Smibert followed with a homer and then Ethan Hunt singled and scored on a single by Zarley Cina.

The Royals scored two runs in the fourth, one in the sixth and then completed their scoring with four in the seventh.

The hosts sent eight batters to the plate in the seventh. Justin Interisano and Ethan Hammond hit back-to-back singles and the bases were loaded when Brendan Keys was walked. Brando Leroux singled home two runs and Kyle Kush singled home another run before the fourth run of the inning came in on a Conner Moro groundout.

Interisano finished the game with two singles for the Royals while Collymore hit a double. Getting one single apiece were Kush, Brian Sewell, Hammond and Leroux.

Mercado took the loss as he yielded seven runs, five earned, in the first 2 2/3 innings. He had two strikeouts and walked a pair.

Barry gave up seven earned runs off seven hits and three walks in his 2 1/3 innings of work.

Daniel Marquez surrendered an earned run off four hits and a walk in three innings. He had a strikeout.

Brandon Deans pitched the ninth and was touched up for an earned run off two hits and two walks. He also had three strikeouts.

Smibert finished the game with a homer, two doubles and a single for Welland while Hogan Brown hit a double and three singles. Matteo Porcellato had two triples and a single while Nicholson had a triple and a single, Markotic had a double and a single, Hunt and Cina each had two singles and Morello had one single.

Starter Scott Gillespie picked up the win for Welland as he gave up three earned runs off one hit and three walks in six innings. He had seven strikeouts.

Michael Bonaccorso, Brandon Underhill and Casey Bouillere-Howard each pitched an inning. Bonaccorso yielded four earned runs off four hits and a walk while Underhill gave up a hit and a walk and Bouillere-Howard surrendered a hit and two walks and he had a strikeout.

Welland leads the league at 9-2 while the Royals tumble to fourth at 6-5.

Next on Guelph’s schedule is a pair of games against the second-place London Majors (7-3). They’re to play at London’s Labatt Park Friday at 7:35 p.m. and at Hastings Stadium Saturday at 1 p.m. in their final Saturday-afternoon home game of the regular season.
