Guelph Royals dumped by Barrie

BARRIE – The Barrie Baycats erupted for nine runs in the eighth inning to clout the Guelph Royals 20-1 in Intercounty Baseball League play Sunday night at Coates Stadium.

The Royals scored their lone run in the third inning as Darius Barlas reached base due to a Barrie fielding error. He went to second on a single by Ethan Mohan and the bases were loaded with none out when Jeff MacLeod was walked. With two out, Justin Interisano’s sacrifice fly to left field scored Barlas.

The Baycats had scored four runs in the second inning and they added four more in the fifth and three more in the seventh.

The Royals connected for nine hits in the game, all singles. Mohan and Brendan Keys had two apiece and MacLeod, Toure Sinclair, Josh Garton, Jon Waltenbury and Barlas each had one.

Mohan also had a stolen base and an error and the Royals stranded 13 runners.

Jeff Cowan had five singles to lead Barrie’s 20-hit attack while Ryan Spataro had four singles. Starlin Rodrigues hit three singles while Kevin Atkinson slugged a homer and a double, Ryan Rijo hit a homer and a single, Branfy Infante hit two doubles and Carson Burns hit two singles.

Yomar Concepcion was charged with the loss as he yielded eight runs, seven earned, off nine hits and a walk in five innings. He had three strikeouts.

Yunior Yambatis, Ben Reid, Andy Orfanakos and Jorge de la Cruz followed in relief. They combined to give up 12 runs, all earned, off 11 hits and five walks in three innings. Yambatis had two strikeouts in two innings while Reid, Orfanakos and de la Cruz each recorded one out.

Matthew St. Kitts had the win for Barrie as he limited the Royals to the single unearned run off six hits and three walks in six innings. He had seven strikeouts.

Brad Bissell surrendered two hits in two innings while Jaspreet Shergill gave up a hit in the ninth. He had two strikeouts.

The result leaves the Royals at 6-11 and Barrie at 12-7.

The Royals are to play the Hamilton Cardinals (5-9) Tuesday at Hastings Stadium. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
