Guelph Royals hit early to pull away from Maple Leafs

TORONTO – After falling behind early Friday night in London, the Guelph Royals weren’t about to let that happen again Sunday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Royals scored five runs in the second inning on their way to a 10-5 victory in Intercounty Baseball League play at Dominico Field at Christie Pits.

Guelph led 8-0 after the fourth inning before the Leafs chipped away in the later innings. It was a similar script to the one used for an IBL outing at Hastings Stadium May 18 when the Leafs rallied from a four-run deficit after three innings to win 5-4.

This time the Royals got too far ahead to be caught, despite being outhit 12-10.

Sean Reilly hit a pair of homers to drive in three runs for Guelph while Josh Garton also homered and Ethan Moran and Darius Barlas hit doubles.

Justin Marra and Marcus Knecht homered for Toronto and Grant Tamane and Johnathan Solazzo hit doubles.

The Royals made the most of their hits and base runners as they limited those left on base to six, half as many as Toronto.

Fernando Fernandez-Beltran picked up the win as he yielded two earned runs off 10 hits and no walks in six innings. He also had six strikeouts. Joel Espinal gave up two runs, one earned, off two hits in an inning. Jean Carlos Henriquez surrendered an unearned run without giving up a hit or a walk in an inning and Yomar Concepcion had two walks and a strikeout in the inning he pitched.

Marek Deska started for Toronto and took the loss as he was tagged for eight runs, seven earned, off eight hits and no walks in four innings. Pedro De Los Santos gave up two runs off two hits and four walks in two innings and Justin Cicatello kept the Royals hitless in three three-up three-down innings. Deska had five strikeouts while the other two had two apiece.

The Royals are slated to play three games in four days this week as they’re to take on the Barrie Baycats at Barrie’s Coates Stadium Thursday at 7:30 p.m., host the London Majors Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hastings Stadium and play the Hamilton Cardinals Sunday at 2 p.m. at Bernie Arbour Stadium.
