Guelph Royals left behind early by London
LONDON – The Guelph Royals fell behind early and never recovered as they were handed a 10-4 setback by the London Majors in Intercounty Baseball League play Friday night at Labatt Park.
The hosts had scored eight runs by the time the Royals scored their first two in the top of the fifth inning. London added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings while the Royals had single runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
The Royals were hurt by six errors that led to five unearned runs.
Guelph starter Yunior Yambatis yielded six runs, four unearned, off five hits and two walks in 2 2/3 innings. He had three strikeouts. Edwin Javier, Ben Reid and Steven Dressler shared mound time the rest of the way had they gave up four runs, one earned, off seven hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings. Dressler had four strikeouts in two innings and Javier had one in 2 1/3 innings.
Guelph pitchers threw five wild pitches and hit two batters and catcher Ricky Murray had a passed ball. London pitchers hit four batters.
Juliandry Higuera claimed the win for London as he surrendered three earned runs off five hits and a walk in seven innings. He had eight strikeouts before giving way to Jon Fitzsimmons who yielded an unearned run off two hits. He had one strikeout.
Ismael Pena of London hit a triple, the only extra-base hit of the game.
The Majors also stole two bases and left 14 runners on base while the stranded nine.
The Royals are to host the Hamilton Cardinals Saturday at Hastings Stadium at 1 p.m. and play the Toronto Maple Leafs at Toronto’s Christie Pits Sunday at 2 p.m.
