Guelph Royals let one slip away

GUELPH – It was there for the taking, but the Guelph Royals just couldn’t hang on to claim a win in Intercounty Baseball League play Tuesday night at Hastings Stadium.

Twice the Royals came back to lead the Brantford Red Sox, but the Red Sox reclaimed the lead both times on their way to an 8-6 victory.

After the Royals shot ahead 6-5 with three runs in the fifth, Brantford scored two in the eighth to shoot ahead for good and the Red Sox added another run in the ninth.

The problems that have plagued the Royals through the first third of the season continued to hinder them against Brantford. The big one’s the errors as they were charged with six of them while the Red Sox were assessed one.

After Brantford scored a single run in the top of the first, the Royals responded with three in the bottom of the inning as Red Sox starter Graham Tebbit struggled to find his groove. The hosts sent eight batters to the plate.

Ethan Mohan clubbed a double in his debut with the Royals and, with one out, Sean Reilly was walked. Justin Interisano followed with a single to score Mohan and Reilly came in on a single by Matthew Pilarczyk. Interisano scored when Brendan Keys hit a single.

However, Brantford regain its lead by scoring at least one run in each of the next three innings, two in the fourth putting them ahead.

The Royals got their other three runs in the fifth. Mohan was walked and Adam Rossit reached first on an error. With one out, Interisano hit a long single to score Mohan. A single by Pilarczyk loaded the bases and a single by Darius Barlas scored Interisano.

Guelph starter Jorge de la Cruz had another no-decision as he allowed five runs, one earned, off six hits and five walks in six innings. He fanned nine. David Hatt, a former Red Sox pitcher, took the loss as he surrendered two runs, one earned, off six hits in two innings. Ben Reid yielded an earned run off two walks in two-thirds of an inning. Edwin Javier struck out the only batter he faced.

Tebbit went six innings for Brantford and he gave up six runs, five earned, off eight hits and two walks and he had seven strikeouts. Tanner Guindon picked up the win in relief, allowing a single hit in two innings, and Tyler Gillies struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth for the save.

Pilarczyk hit three singles for the Royals while Interisano and Barlas hit two apiece. Mohan had his double while Keys hit a single.

David Mendham hit three singles for Brantford and Andris Rizquez hit a triple and a double and Nate DeSouza hit two singles.

The result leaves the Royals at 4-8 and Brantford at 3-6. The Royals have lost to every team in the league except the defending-champion Barrie Baycats.

The game was the first of four for the Royals this week. They’re to play the Burlington Herd (2-10) at Burlington’s Nelson Park Thursday at 7:15 p.m., host the London Majors (8-4) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and play the Toronto Maple Leafs (9-4) at Dominico Field at Christie Pits Sunday at 2 p.m.
