
Guelph Royals let one with London get away
GUELPH – The Guelph Royals let one slip away as the London Majors scored an 11-inning, 7-6 victory in Intercounty Baseball League play Saturday at Hastings Stadium.
The Royals squandered a four-run lead in the loss.
London Majors 7 Guelph Royals 6 (11 innings)
The Royals did get to London starter Pedro De Los Santos, scoring two runs in the first inning and two more in the third. They also left six runners on base in the first three innings and 15 throughout the game.
Guelph’s first four batters of the game all reached base. J.D. Williams singled on the first pitch he faced before Ethan Hammond and Sean Reilly were issued back-to-back walks to load the bases. Malik Collymore doubled in Williams and Hammond.
The Royals had the bases loaded again in the third inning, with one out. Collymore and Justin Interisano were both walked before Jeff MacLeod hit into a fielder’s choice with Collymore out at third. Kyle Kush singled to load the bases and Brendan Keys was walked to send Interisano home. Brando Leroux grounded out, but MacLeod scored on the play.
London cut the gap to a single run when the Majors scored three runs in the fifth. Guelph added a run in the sixth but London pulled even with two in the seventh.
The Majors went ahead for the first time in the game with a run in the top of the 10th while the hosts scored a run in the bottom of the inning.
London picked up the win with a run in the 11th. Phil Whelan started as the runner on second and he moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Chris McQueen. With two out, Whelan scored on a wild pitch before the Royals recorded their third out of the inning.
The Royals went pretty quietly in the bottom of the 11th with two strikeouts and a fly out to shortstop to end the game.
Guelph batters had 10 hits in the game, but the Royals committed three errors. Williams had four of the hits with two doubles and two singles to knock in a pair of runs. Leroux hit a double and a single while Collymore had his two-run double. Adding one single apiece were Reilly, Interisano and Kush.
London had nine hits and didn’t commit any errors. McQueen hit a double while Gibson Krzeminski, Andrew Lawrence, Cleveland Brownlee, Robert Mullen, Starling Joseph, Taylor Wright, Keith Kandel and Whelan each hit a single.
Claudio Custodio started and went seven innings for the Royals. He yielded five earned runs off nine hits and two walks and he struck out 13.
Ben Reid pitched an inning and didn’t allow any runs or hits. He had a strikeout and a walk. Brandon Deans pitched the final three innings and was charged with the loss. He gave up two unearned runs, but no hits. He had four strikeouts and a walk.
De Los Santos yielded five earned runs off eight hits and five walks in five innings. He had four strikeouts.
Bo Lewington pitched 4 1/3 innings, surrendering an unearned run off two hits and two walks and he also had two strikeouts. Jarryd Lund pitched 1 2/3 innings to get the win. He kept the Royals scoreless and hitless during his stint and finished with four strikeouts and a walk.
The Royals fall to 6-7 and are fifth in the eight-team league. Welland Jackfish lead at 11-2 while the Majors are second at 9-3 and Barrie Baycats and Toronto Maple Leafs are tied for third at 8-6. Behind the Royals are the Kitchener Panthers at 5-7, Hamilton Cardinals at 4-7 and Brantford Red Sox at 0-13.
The Royals are to play three games this week as they’re to host Barrie Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., play the Red Sox at Brantford Friday at 8 p.m. and host Hamilton Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
