Guelph Royals nipped in 10th inning by Barrie

BARRIE – The Guelph Royals surrendered the winning run with two out in the 10th inning as they were edged 5-4 by the Barrie Baycats in Intercounty Baseball League play Thursday night at Coates Stadium.

After Jordan Castaldo of the Baycats hit a single to start the bottom half of the inning, the Royals recorded their lone double play of the game to erase the base runners. However, Kyle DeGrace followed with a double to right field and Darren Shred drove him home with a single to right.

The game had been close throughout with neither team getting ahead by more than a run. The Royals scored a run in the second and Barrie responded with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Both teams scored two runs in the seventh and the locals tied it up with a run in the eighth.

The Royals made the most of their hits as they were limited to five in the game including a homer by Riley Perks and a double by Brendan Keys.

Joel Espinal started and went six innings for the Royals, yielding two runs off five hits and four walks. He had five strikeouts.

Brett Lawson relieved his former teammates with the Baycats connected for two runs, one earned, off two hits in an inning. Evan Kiser took over and went the final 2 2/3 innings, holding Barrie to a single run off four hits. He didn’t walk anyone and had a strikeout.

Adrian Salcedo tossed eight innings for Barrie, giving up the four Guelph runs off five hits and three walks. He had nine strikeouts. Adam Hawes pitched two hitless innings to get the win. He had three strikeouts.
