Guelph Royals score first, but fall to London Majors

LONDON – The Guelph Royals were held scoreless after the first inning as they suffered a 6-1 loss to the London Majors in Intercounty Baseball League play Monday afternoon at Labatt Park.

The Royals scored a run in the top of the first, but their hold on the lead disappeared in the bottom of the inning as London shot ahead to stay with three runs. The Majors added single runs in the fourth, fifth and eighth innings.

In the first, Conner Morro hit a one-out single to centre field for the Royals. He went to second on a single by Malik Collymore, advanced to third on a single to left field by J.D. Williams and scored on an error by London left fielder Phil Whelan.

In the bottom of the inning, Guelph starter Emilis Guerrero allowed hits to each of the first four batters he faced. Whelan singled, but was caught stealing second before Chris McQueen and veteran Cleveland Brownlee hit back-to-back doubles to score McQueen. Robert Mullen followed with a two-run homer on a 1-2 pitch.

London pitcher Owen Boon pitched the complete game for the Majors, limiting the Royals to six hits. He had 13 strikeouts and walked two.

Guerrero, who had thrown 35 pitches in 2/3 of an inning of relief in Sunday’s win at Hamilton, threw 82 pitches in five innings and was tagged with the loss. He yielded five earned runs off eight hits and a walk and he struck out three.

Daniel Marquez and Ben Reid saw time on the mound in relief. Marquez pitched two scoreless innings while Reid yielded an earned run off a hit and a walk in one inning of work. He also had a strikeout.

Ethan Hammond had two hits for the Royals including a double, their lone extra-base hit. Morro, Collymore, Williams and Brendan Key each had a single.

Mullen finished with three hits and three RBIs for the Majors as he connected for his homer, a double and a single. Brownlee had a double and a single while McQueen hit a double and Whelan, Taylor Wright and Starling Joseph each hit a single.

The result squares Guelph’s record at 1-1 while London improves to 2-1.

The Royals have three more games scheduled for this week as they’re to play the Barrie Baycats (3-0) at Barrie’s Vintage Throne Stadium Thursday at 7:30 p.m., host the Brantford Red Sox (0-3) Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hastings Stadium and play the Kitchener Panthers (0-1) at Kitchener’s Jack Couch Park Sunday at 2 p.m.
