Guelph Royals suffer another loss to Toronto
TORONTO – The Toronto Maple Leafs have the Guelph Royals’ number early in the 100th Intercounty Baseball League season.
Sunday at Dominico Field at Christie Pits, the host Leafs handed the Royals an 11-5 setback for their second victory over the Guelph side in as many days and third win over the Royals this season.
Four runs in the bottom of the third inning put the Leafs ahead for good. They had scored one in the second before the Royals shot ahead with two in the top of the third. Toronto also scored two in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the seventh and one in the eighth while the Royals also collected three in the fifth.
The hosts scored their four runs off three hits and an error by Guelph shortstop Narciso Padilla in the third. With two out and Johnathan Solazzo on first after being issued a walk, Solazzo scored after a single by Dan Marra and an error that allowed Daniel Szpik to reach first. Szpik stole second and Greg Carrington followed with a double to plate Dan Marra and Szpik. Carrington scored on a single by Connor Lewis.
Concepcion took the loss for the Royals as he allowed nine runs, five earned, off 10 hits and five walks in five innings. Daniel Marquez pitched the final three innings and he gave up two earned runs off four hits and a walk. Concepcion had four strikeouts and Marquez had three.
Zach Sloan picked up the win for Toronto as he allowed five runs, four earned, off seven hits and two walks in six innings. He had four strikeouts. Nick DaSilva gave up two hits and struck out three in the inning he pitched and Adam Marra tossed two scoreless innings, surrendering a hit and getting a strikeout.
Quniton Bent hit three singles for the Royals while Sean Reilly drove in three runs with a double and a single. Matthew Pilarczyk hit two singles while Darius Barlas, Justin Interisano and Padilla each hit one single.
Lewis smacked a triple and two singles for Toronto while Justin Marra hit three singles. Dan Marra and Zac Orchard each hit two singles while Carrington hit a double and Grant Tamane, Mike Reeves and Solazzo each had one single.
The Royals fall to 3-4 with the loss while the Leafs improve to 7-3.
The Royals are to host the Burlington Herd (0-8) Tuesday at Hastings Stadium. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
