Guelph Royals to be busy to start 2022 IBL season

GUELPH – After being the lone team not to participate in the 2021 Intercounty Baseball League season, the Guelph Royals are scheduled to hit the ground running to start the 2022 campaign.

The league released its schedule Monday and the Royals are slated to play seven games (three at home at Hastings Stadium) in their first 11 days of the season. And that quick start is to include one game against each of Guelph’s seven league mates.

While the league’s season is to start in the usual way, with a Sunday afternoon game at Dominico Field at Christie Pits May 15, the Leafs are to begin their season with an afternoon home match against the Toronto Maple Leafs May 21. That’ll be Toronto’s third game of the season.

The following afternoon, the Royals are to be the opponents for the home opener for the Hamilton Cardinals at Bernie Arbour Memorial Stadium.

And just for good measure, the Royals are to make it a three-in-three with an afternoon match on a holiday Monday, Victoria Day, against the defending champion London Majors at Labatt Memorial Park.

They’re to follow that with a night game May 26 against the Barrie Baycats at Coates Stadium before a home game against the Brantford Red Sox on the afternoon of May 28 and then a short jaunt to Kitchener’s Jack Couch Park for an afternoon game against the host Panthers May 29.

The Royals are to wrap up the quick start with their first home night game of the season May 31 against the Welland Jackfish.

This year each IBL team is to play a 42-game regular season.

The Royals have four three-in-threes on their schedule as they’re also to play each day July 1 to 3 with the first two games at home, July 22 to 24 with road games at the start and the beginning, the same as the season-closing weekend August 19 to 21.

The locals also have a pair of back-to-back home-and-home games against the same opponent as they’re to play London June 17 and 18 and Toronto July 2 and 3. They’re at Labatt Memorial Park for the first of the two consecutive games against the Majors and at Hastings Stadium for the first of the two in a row against the Leafs.

Things can, of course, change before the first pitch of the season is thrown. The Royals were on the original schedule last year before opting out due to concerns about the pandemic.
