Guelph Royals trampled by Welland Jackfish

WELLAND – What a difference a couple of days make.

One game after everything seemed to go their way, the Guelph Royals struggled, especially on the mound, as they were doubled 16-8 by the Welland Jackfish in Intercounty Baseball League play Thursday night in their first trip to Welland Stadium.

While they twice had leads in the game, 4-0 after an inning and a half and 6-5 after three and a half, the Royals just couldn’t shut Welland down. The Jackfish were held without a run in two of the eight innings they batted, but scored two or more runs in five of the other innings.

Jeff MacLeod belted his first homer of the season for the Royals while Sean Reilly hit a double and drove in two runs. Each of the other 10 hits recorded by the Royals, including all four hit by Kyle Kush, were singles.

Former Royal Matt Schmidt had four hits for Welland including two doubles. He drove in three runs.

Joel Espinal started for the Royals and was relieved by Edwin Javier in the fourth inning and he was relieved by Jean Carlos Henriquez in the sixth inning and he was relieved by Ben Reid in the seventh inning. They combined to allow the 16 runs, 13 earned, off 15 hits and 10 walks. They also had 11 strikeouts – four apiece by Espinal and Henriquez, two by Javier and one by Reid. Javier was charged with the loss.

Euclides Leyer had the win for Welland despite yielding six earned runs off six hits and six walks in five innings. He had seven strikeouts. Reliever Chris Boatto worked the final four innings and he gave up two earned runs off six hits and a walk and also had three strikeouts.

The loss put an end to Guelph’s three-game win streak.

The Royals are to play the London Majors at London’s Labatt Park Friday at 7:35 p.m. and host the Brantford Red Sox Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hastings Stadium.
