Guelph Silvercreeks hand Kitchener its first loss

KITCHENER – The Guelph Silvercreeks built a five-run lead and then held on for a 7-6 victory over the Kitchener Junior Panthers in Central Ontario junior baseball league play Tuesday night at Jack Couch Park.

The Creeks opened the scoring with a single run in the first inning, the run coming in on a bases-loaded walk. They added three more runs in the second and Tyler Monks hit a two-run homer in the fourth as Guelph got its lead back to four runs at 6-2.

The winning run came in the top of the fifth before Kitchener scored four runs later in the game to close the gap to the final one-run margin.

Jayce MacKenzie picked up the win with a six-inning outing while Jason Boulanger pitched the seventh and Sam Worthen tossed the eighth and ninth innings for the save.

The result leaves the Creeks at 8-1 and Kitchener at 7-1.

After playing four games in seven days, the Creeks are idle until June 26 when they’re to host the Mississauga North Two Tigers at Hastings Stadium. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
