Guelph squads advance to field hockey semifinals
GUELPH – Wednesday’s District 4/10 high school girls’ field hockey semifinals will feature a pair of all-Guelph matches after the out-of-towners were ousted from the playoffs in Monday’s quarter-finals.
They came, but they didn’t conquer as the Centre Dufferin Royals of Shelburne, Orangeville Bears, Centre Wellington Falcons of Fergus and Wellington Heights Wolverines of Mount Forest all saw their seasons come to an end at Varsity Field.
The quarter-finals started with the only upset of the day, but it wasn’t a huge one as the fifth-place Centennial Spartans edged fourth-play Centre Dufferin 2-1. The Spartans had been edged 1-0 by Centre Dufferin in league play earlier this month and that result basically led to the final positions of both Centennial and the northern Royals.
In the other quarter-finals, the third-place Bishop Macdonell Celtics blanked sixth-place Orangeville 2-0, second-place Guelph CVI Green Gaels dropped seventh-place Centre Wellington 7-0 and first-place Ross Royals downed eighth-place Wellington Heights 7-0.
The semifinals are set for Wednesday at Varsity Field. Centennial is to play Ross at 2:30 p.m. and Bishop Mac is to battle GCVI at 4 p.m.
Centennial 2 Centre Dufferin 1
Hilary Davidson and Alyssa Wolf scored the goals for Centennial.
Morgan Bennington had the goal for Centre Dufferin.
Bishop Macdonell 2 Orangeville 0
Samantha Tracey and Julia Billings fired in goals for Bishop Mac.
Guelph CVI 7 Centre Wellington 0
Seven players scored for GCVI as the goals were netted by Maggie Smart, Jasmine Hasmatali, Olivia Puddephatt, Amy Pike, Clara Sebastian, Sara Michaels and Jessie Struyk. Lou Meloche and Brooklynn Loder shared the shutout.
Ross 7 Wellington Heights 0
Jordan Faveri and Courtney Phillips connected for two goals apiece for Ross while Sarah Taylor, Brooke Frasson and Kaleigh Boyd added single goals. Acacia Douglas- Henke picked up the shutout.
