Guelph Storm beats up on trading partner

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm fired home six consecutive goals to drop their Friday trading partner, the Peterborough Petes, in Ontario Hockey League play Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The Storm, who sent defenceman Ryan Merkley to the Petes for forward Pavel Gogolev and five draft picks earlier in the day, yielded the only goal of the first period before rallying with three goals in the second and three more in the third. Neither played against their old teammates.

Liam Hawel and Keegan Stevenson scored twice apiece for the Storm while Nate Schnarr had a goal and three assists and Cedric Ralph also scored. Dmitri Samorukov set up two of the goals while Zach Poirier, Alexey Toropchenko and Hawel each had one assist.

Cameron Butler scored for Peterborough while Declan Chisholm and Nick Isaacson assisted on the goal.

The Storm outshot the Petes 38-23 and went 3-for-6 on their power play while Peterborough was scoreless on three power plays.

Anthony Popovich had the win in the Guelph net while Tye Austin took the loss for Peterborough.

The Storm is third in the Midwest Division at 15-9-3-4 while Peterborough is third in the East Division at 18-14-0-0.

The game was the first of a three-in-three weekend for the Storm as they’re to host the Mississauga Steelheads (15-13-3-0) Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre and play the Oshawa Generals (20-10-2-0) at Oshawa’s Tribute Communities Centre Sunday at 6:05 p.m.
