Guelph Storm blanked in preseason opener

ORANGEVILLE – The Guelph Storm opened their Ontario Hockey League preseason with a 4-0 setback to the Mississauga Steelheads Friday night at the Adler Recreation Centre.

Mississauga scored single goals in the first and second periods before adding two goals in the third.

Nick Isaacson connected for a pair of goals for the Steelheads while Michael Stubbs and Duncan Penman also scored. Keean Washkurak and Cole Schwindt each had two assists while Luca DelBelBelluz and Max Dodig had one each.

The Storm was outshot 38-24 and neither team netted a power-play goal, the Storm on seven chances and Mississauga on three.

Tanner Wickware and Owen Bennett shared the goaltending chores for Guelph with each playing approximately half the game. Wickware allowed a goal on 16 shots while Bennett surrendered three goals on 22 shots.

Joe Ranger and Justin Dilauro tended goal for Mississauga with Rangers stopping 16 shots in the first two periods and Dilauro turning aside eight in the third.

The Storm went with a fairly rookie-laden lineup with only three players suiting up who played for the team in last season’s playoffs. By comparison, Mississauga used 11 who played for the Steelheads in the OHL playoffs last spring.

The game was the first of the preseason for both teams.

The Storm has a pair of home games this weekend as they are to host the Flint Firebirds Saturday at 7 p.m. and Mississauga Monday at 2 p.m. Both games are to be played at the Sleeman Centre.
