
Guelph Storm come back for another win over Otters
ERIE, Pa. – Hunter McKenzie’s second goal of the season capped a comeback as it lifted the Guelph Storm to a 4-3 victory over the Erie Otters in OHL play Saturday night at the Erie Insurance Arena.
It was the Storm’s second win over Erie in as many days as the Storm had defeated the Otters 7-2 at the Sleeman Centre Friday night.

The Storm had trailed the Otters 3-0 just past the midway mark of the first period before rebounding with a goal later in the period and two goals in the second period.
Braeden Bowman tallied twice for Guelph while Michael Buchinger had the other goal. Matthew Poitras assisted on three of the goals while Jake Karabela, Buchinger and Bowman each had single assists.
Pano Fimis, Noah Sedore and Colby Saganiuk had a goal apiece for Erie while Liam Gilmartin assisted on two of the goals. Getting one assist apiece were Ondrej Molnar, Owain Johnston, Saganiuk and Alexis Daviault.
The Storm were limited to eight shots or fewer in each period and were outshot 25-19. Both teams had a single power-play goal, Guelph’s coming on four power plays and Erie’s on five.
Brayden Gillespie had 22 saves for the Storm while Kyle Downey had 15 for Erie.
The win leaves the Storm in seventh in the Western Conference at 15-18-4-1 while Erie is 10th at 12-19-0-3. Guelph is six points behind the fourth-place Flint Firebirds (19-14-2-1) and five behind both the Owen Sound Attack (18-13-3-1) and Sarnia Sting (17-12-4-2). They’re also two ahead of the Soo Greyhounds (11-14-7-4) and three ahead of the Kitchener Rangers (15-17-2-0). However, the Storm have played more games than any other team in the conference.
London Knights lead at 26-8-1-0 while the Saginaw Spirit is second at 24-11-2-0 and Windsor Spitfires are third at 22-9-3-1.
The win was also the third in as many meetings with the Otters this season as Guelph also won 4-2 at the Sleeman Centre Dec. 2. The Storm and Otters are to meet three more times as they’re to play Feb. 2 and March 18 at Erie and March 24 at the Sleeman Centre.
The Storm are to play the Hamilton Bulldogs at Hamilton’s FirstOntario Centre Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs are seventh in the Eastern Conference at 15-16-4-0.
That game will be the first of seven the Storm have left in the regular season against Eastern Conference teams. They have two remaining against the Peterborough Petes (third at 21-13-1-2) and one each against the Kingston Frontenacs (sixth at 17-17-1-1), Sudbury Wolves (eighth at 14-17-3-0), Oshawa Generals (ninth at 12-19-1-3) and Mississauga Steelheads (fifth at 16-16-4-0).
