Guelph Storm fall behind early in loss in Windsor

WINDSOR – The Guelph Storm surrendered the first three goals of the game, one on a penalty shot, in a 4-1 loss in OHL play Wednesday night at Windsor’s WFCU Centre.

Windsor scored the lone goal of the first period and added two more in the second period, the second of that pair coming on a penalty shot with 24 seconds to go in the period.

The Storm got their goal on a power play in the middle stages of the third period while the Spitfires restored their three-goal advantage just over six minutes later.

Cooper Walker scored for the Storm, his 21st of the season, while assists went to Michael Buchinger and Matthew Poitras.

Matthew Maggio, Alex Christopoulos, Aidan Castle and Shane Wright collected the goals for Windsor while Jacob Maillet, Anthony Cristoforo, Maggio, Brett Harrison, Noah Morneau and Christopoulos picked up single assists.

The Spitfires outshot the Storm 36-28 mainly due to a 15-6 advantage in the first period. Windsor went 1-for-5 on its power play while the Storm went 1-for-3.

Brayden Gillespie had 32 saves for the Storm while Joey Costanzo had 27 for Windsor.

The Storm are tied for sixth in the Western Conference standings with two games to go in their regular season.

Windsor leads the conference at 43-17-4-2 and are followed by the London Knights (43-20-2-0), Sarnia Sting (39-17-5-4), Saginaw Spirit (36-24-3-2), Flint Firebirds (34-27-4-1), Kitchener Rangers (33-28-5-0), the Storm (33-28-4-1), Owen Sound Attack (31-27-6-1), Soo Greyhounds (19-32-9-6) and Erie Otters (20-39-2-5). Soo and Erie, the two teams that won’t qualify for the playoffs in the conference, are the only ones locked into their final positions in the standings.

With two games to go, the Storm can finish anywhere from fifth to eighth, meaning they will not get home-ice advantage in the conference quarter-finals that are to start next week.

The Storm are to complete their regular season this weekend. They’re to host Erie Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre and play the Spirit at Saginaw’s Dow Event Center Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
