Guelph Storm left behind in Saginaw’s ice chips

SAGINAW – The Guelph Storm gave up six goals in the third period as they were downed 10-6 by the Saginaw Spirit in OHL play Saturday night at the Dow Event Center.

The hosts had led 3-1 at the end of the first period and 4-3 after the second before leaving the Storm behind in the third.

Danny Zhilkin, Jett Luchanko, Cedricson Okitundu, Braeden Bowman, Cooper Walker and Matthew Poitras each had a goal for the Storm while Jake Karabela and Cam Allen each had two assists. Getting one assist apiece were Michael Buchinger, Valentin Zhugin, Walker, Poitras, Sasha Pastujov, Ben McFarlane and Niko Minkkinen.

Calem Mangone and Michael Misa tallied twice each for Saginaw while single goals were added by Sebastien Gervais, Roberto Mancini, Theo Hill, Pavel Mintyukov, Joey Willis and Josh Bloom. Mintyukov assisted on four of the goals while Dean Loukus and Davis Codd each had three assists and Gervais and Mitchell Smith each had two. Following with one assist each were Willis, Brayden Hislop, PJ Forgione, Bloom and Mangone.

The Storm outshot the Spirit 34-28, but were held to 1-for-7 on their power play while Saginaw went 3-for-6.

Tristan Lennox had 28 saves for Saginaw to get the win. Jacob Oster started in net and took the loss for the Storm. He had 17 saves while Ethan Kowatsch had one save in the final 5:53 of the game.

The loss leaves the Storm at 0-1-1-0 while the game was the season opener for Saginaw.

The Storm are to host the Flint Firebirds (0-1-0-0) Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.
