Guelph Storm nipped by Flint in preseason play
GUELPH – The Guelph Storm surrendered a pair of goals in the third period as they were edged 7-5 by the Flint Firebirds in Ontario Hockey League preseason play Saturday night at the Sleeman Centre.
The Storm led 3-2 at the end of the first period before the Firebirds rallied to pull even 5-5 in the second.
Eric Uba, Keegan Stevenson, Pavel Gogolev, Andrei Bakanov and Cedric Ralph each had a goal for the Storm while Cam Hillis assisted on two of the goals. Single assists were awarded to Ralph, Colin Campbell, Gogolev, Stevenson and Daniil Chayka.
Brennan Othmann and Riley McCourt tallied twice apiece for Flint while Ethan Keppen, Hunter Holmes and Dennis Busby netted single goals. Ty Dellandrea assisted on four of the goals while Evgeniy Oksentyuk had two assists and Jack Harper, Holmes and Emmet Pierce had one apiece.
The Storm was outshout 39-31 and both teams were scoreless on three power plays. Both teams also won 28 faceoffs.
Nico Daws and Owen Bennett split time in the Guelph net with both playing approximately half the game. Daws allowed three goals on 20 shots while Bennett yielded four goals on 19 shots.
Evan Morrison went the distance in the Flint net and he had 26 saves.
The loss was the second in as many preseason outings for the Storm who had a more veteran lineup than they did in a 4-0 loss to the Mississauga Steelheads in Orangeville Friday night. They had nine players who saw action in the league last season while Flint had 16 players suited up who played in the league last season for their preseason opener.
The Storm are to host Mississauga (2-0-0) Monday at 2 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre in their next preseason outing.
