Guelph Storm nipped by Wolves

SUDBURY – Drake Pilon’s goal in a shootout lifted the Sudbury Wolves to a 5-4 victory over the Guelph Storm in Ontario Hockey League play Saturday at the Sudbury Community Arena.

Drake Pilon was the 16th shooter in the shootout as the teams had scored twice apiece before then.

Nate Schnarr and Cedric Ralph scored for the Storm on Sudbury goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Quinton Byfield and Shane Bulitka scored for Sudbury on Storm goalie Nico Daws.

The teams scored once each in the first period and three times apiece in the second before a scoreless third. Sudbury scored three consecutive goals in the first eight minutes of the second while the Storm responded with three in a row after the 12-minute mark of the period.

Ryan Merkley, Dmitri Samorukov, Isaac Ratcliffe and Keegan Stevenson each scored in regulation time for the Storm while Liam Hawel and Nate Schnarr each had two assists and Daws and Samorukov each had one.

Drake Pilon, Owen Gilhula, David Levin and Nolan Hutcheson scored in regulation time for Sudbury. Shane Bulitka and Quinton Byfield each had two assists while Blake Murray, Peter Stratis and Levin each had one.

The Storm outshot Sudbury 38-23 and went 1-for-7 on their power play while Sudbury was scoreless on four power plays.

For the second game in a row Daws replaced starter Anthony Popovich in the Storm net. Popovich was relieved after Sudbury’s third goal.

The Storm (14-8-3-4) is tied for second in the Midwest Division standings with the Owen Sound Attack (16-11-1-2). They’re to play at Owen Sound Tuesday.

Sudbury leads the Central Division at 19-8-1-1.
