Guelph Storm nipped in overtime to start season

GUELPH – A power-play goal in overtime by Guelph native Logan Morrison gave the defending OHL champion Hamilton Bulldogs a 5-4 victory over the Guelph Storm in the season opener for both teams Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

Morrison’s goal, his second of the game, came with four seconds remaining in the five-minute overtime period.

The goal also ended the Storm’s attempt at a comeback as they had rallied from a three-goal deficit late in the second period to force the overtime.

Hamilton led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 4-2 at the end of the second.

Matthew Poitras, Jake Karabela, Valentin Zhugin and Ben McFarlane scored a goal apiece for the Storm. Braeden Bowman, Cam Allen, Poitras, Payton Robinson, Cooper Walker and Zhugin each had an assist.

George Diaco scored twice for Hamilton while Marek Vanacker also had a goal. Lucas Moore collected three assists while Avery Hayes had two and Cole Brown, Diaco, Noah Van Vliet, Morrison and Vanacker each had one.

The Storm outshot the Bulldogs 33-22, but were scoreless on five power plays while Hamilton went 3-for-8 on its power play. The Storm did score a shorthanded goal.

Jacob Oster had 17 saves in net for the Storm and he took the loss while winning goalie Matteo Drobac had 29 saves for Hamilton.

The Storm is to play the Saginaw Spirit at Saginaw’s Dow Event Center Saturday at 7:05 p.m. in Saginaw’s season opener.
